A mascot costume needs to look good in photos, hold its shape and feel comfortable enough for the person wearing it. That is why choosing materials involves more than picking a fabric colour.
Many mascot designs use a soft, smooth fabric on the outside. Depending on the character, plush fabric, printed panels, embroidery or other decorative details can also be added. The right choice depends on the look you want: a furry animal, for example, may need a different finish from a cartoon product mascot.
When reviewing a fabric sample, look closely at its texture, colour and seams. A short video showing someone touching and moving the fabric can be more useful than a photo alone.
The outer fabric covers a structure that gives the character its shape. A large, rounded body may use high-elastic foam to create volume while allowing movement. A character head with clearly defined facial features may call for an EVA structure or carved foam. Different parts of the same costume can use different materials.
There is no single material combination that suits every mascot. A design with a large body, small details and an expressive face needs to be assessed as a whole.
Ask to see photos of the proposed fabric, an unfinished head or body structure, and a finished costume made with a similar technique. If the costume will be used regularly, discuss the expected activity, storage and cleaning needs too.
The best material choice is the one that supports your character’s appearance and the way you plan to use it. Share your design and intended use with us, and we can discuss suitable material options for your costume.
